The belief in a flat earth is growing among conspiracy minded people on the internet. Does the Bible teach that the earth is flat?

The Bible is not a science book, but nothing in it contradicts the facts of nature. Several scriptural passages suggest a spherical shape.

Isaiah 40:22 reads, "He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy and spreads them out like a tent to live in." The Hebrew word translated as "circle of the earth" can also mean the horizon. When observed from a great height, such as a mountain, the horizon appears circular. The writers of the Bible did not have the knowledge of cosmology that we currently have, and they used descriptions based on what they could physically observe. I would encourage a flat-earth believer to view the horizon from a great height. The horizon's circle is visual proof of the round earth that we can see with our eyes.

"He marks out the horizon on the face of the waters for a boundary between light and darkness" Job 26:10. This passage additionally presents a curved horizon, which is more consistent with a curved spherical Earth than a flat one.

"As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us" Psalm 103:2. The directions east and west will never meet on a round earth, but on a flat earth, there would be a defined distance. So although this a poetic statement, it is consistent with the globe we live on.

The purpose of God's word is not to communicate scientific or technical knowledge but spiritual knowledge. But as Christians, we need to embrace ALL TRUTH, whether Biblical or natural. To deny the observable fact of a round earth is to live in ignorance of the Creation God has given us.
